Measurement of packet loss probability by optimal design of packet probing experiments

چکیده
Packet level measurement is now critical to many aspects of broadband networking, e.g. for guaranteeing Service Level Agreements, facilitating measurement-based admission control algorithms, and performing network tomography. Because it is often impossible to measure all the data passing across a network, the most widely used method of measurement works by injecting probe packets. The probes provide samples of the packet loss and delay, and from these samples the loss and delay performance of the traffic as a whole can be deduced. However measuring performance like this is prone to errors. Recent work has shown that some of these errors are minimized by using a gamma renewal process as the optimal pattern for the time instants at which to inject probes. This leaves the best rate at which to inject probes as the key unsolved problem, and we address this here by using the statistical principles of the Design of Experiments. The experimental design approach allows us

Design and Practical Implementation of a New Markov Model Predictive Controller for Variable Communication Packet Loss in Network Control Systems
The current paper investigates the influence of packet losses in network control systems (NCS’s) using the model predictive control (MPC) strategy. The study focuses on two main network packet losses due to sensor to controller and controller to actuator along the communication paths. A new Markov-based method is employed to recursively estimate the probability of time delay in controller to ac...
متن کاملOn Optimal Magnitude of Fluctuations in Probe Packet Arrival Intervals
Active measurement is an end-to-end measurement technique that can estimate network performance. The active measurement techniques of PASTA-based probing and periodic-probing are widely used. However, for the active measurement of delay and loss, Baccelli et al. reported that there are many other probing policies that can achieve appropriate estimation if we can assume the non-intrusive context...
متن کاملRobust Model for Networked Control System with Packet Loss
The Networked Control System in modern control widely uses to decrease the implementation cost and increasing the performance. NCS in addition to its advantages is inevitable. Nevertheless they suffer of some limitations and deficiencies. Packet loss is one of the main limitations which affect the control system in different conditions and finally may lead to system instability. For this reason...
متن کاملA Model for Endpoint Admission Control Based on Packet Loss
Endpoint admission control solutions, based on probing a transmission path, have been proposed to meet quality requirements of audio–visual applications with little support from routers. In this paper we present a mathematical analysis of a probe–based admission control solution, where flows are accepted or rejected based on the packet–loss statistics in the probe stream. The analysis relates b...
متن کاملDesign of Probing Experiments for Loss Tomography
Network tomography aims to infer the individual performance of networked elements (e.g., links) using aggregate measurements on end-to-end paths. Previous work on network tomography focuses primarily on developing estimators using the given measurements, while the design of measurements is often neglected. We fill this gap by proposing a framework to design probing experiments with focus on pro...
